Full description

Your evening begins at our Northern Lights Safari base, where your guide—trained through our Aurora Guide Training Program—explains the plan for the night.

This moment is important: the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and no one can control the final outcome. What we can guarantee is the highest possible chance by using expert knowledge, real-time cloud data, and years of experience to choose the best direction for clear skies.

We believe clear expectations make for the best experience. This is a true Arctic adventure, and each night is different. Sometimes we stay close to Tromsø, and sometimes we drive far into the fjords or even across the border to find clearer skies. To make the journey more comfortable, you’ll travel in a warm, modern vehicle with a toilet on board—a small but important comfort during a long safari night.

At our viewing location, we set up a cozy Arctic camp with hot drinks, biscuits, and thermal suits to keep you warm. Your guide shares stories, Aurora science, and behind-the-scenes glimpses from our upcoming Northern Lights Safari TV series—giving you a rare insight into the world of real Aurora hunters.

When the lights appear, your guide helps you experience the moment fully and captures professional photos of you under the Aurora. Each guest can also request our Northern Lights Safari Official Certificate, marking your achievement and welcoming you into our growing Aurora community.

Throughout the night, we adjust our position if needed, always chasing the clearest skies. Your safety, comfort, and experience are our priority. This is why travelers choose us—and why we are known as the most trusted Northern Lights company in Tromsø.

Expect an honest, well-organized, expert-led adventure where nature decides the final show, but our experience gives you the best possible chance to witness it.

From 822 kr (about €76) in October, 851 kr (about €79) to 1,200 kr (about €112) November to February. Prices vary by date and are charged in NOK.

Leave the city lights of Tromsø behind and chase the aurora with guides who read the forecast in real time. On the Classic Northern Lights Tour, we drive to wherever the sky is clearest — fjordside, valley, or mountain plateau — to give you the best possible chance of a display.

Hot drinks and snacks keep you warm while we wait, and our guides help you capture the moment with tripods and camera settings dialled in for the Northern Lights. We photograph you under the aurora and share the images afterwards at no extra cost.

What makes this tour different

Tromsø sits in the middle of the auroral oval, which makes it one of the most reliable places on earth to see the northern lights. The lights move with the weather, though, and the difference between a good night and a great one is usually the willingness to drive. This is why we do not follow the same route every night: your guides read the aurora forecast, the cloud cover and the wind through the evening and take the bus to wherever the sky is clearest, sometimes close to the city, sometimes far into the fjords or across the border into Finland.

Our guides are trained through Northern Lights Safari's own Aurora Program, and our historical tour data shows visible northern lights on more than 95% of tours. That is a track record, not a guarantee: the aurora is a natural phenomenon, and if a tour sees no lights at all you can join another tour at 50% off, subject to availability.

What to expect on the night

We meet in Tromsø city centre in the evening; the exact meeting point comes with your booking confirmation. Your guide explains the plan for the night, and then the chase begins in a warm, modern bus with a toilet on board. Most tours last five to seven hours, depending on how far the clear sky is that night.

When we find the lights, we set up camp with chairs and hot drinks (hot chocolate, coffee and tea), your guide shares the science and the stories behind the aurora, and an expert photographer takes professional photos of you under the lights. The pictures are shared with you after the tour at no extra cost. Full-body thermal winter suits are available as an add-on at checkout if you want extra warmth over your own layers.

When to see the northern lights in Tromsø

The season runs from late September to early April, when the nights are dark enough for the aurora to show. The lights are active year-round; darkness, not cold, is what you need, which is why the midnight sun hides them in summer. Within the season, what matters most on any given night is clear sky, and that is exactly what the chase is built around.

Prices follow the season: the cheapest nights are in autumn, and December to February, when demand peaks, cost more. The checkout shows the exact price for your date before you enter any details.

We had a wonderful experience with our guide Matous and driver Thomas during the Northern Lights trip on 21st March 2026. The tour started right at 6:30 pm and continued until we returned around 3:00 am. Despite very cloudy conditions throughout the evening and night, their dedication and effort were truly commendable. They actively chased clear skies, driving us for around 5 hours from Tromsø towards the Finland border in search of better conditions — an amazing chase — and thanks to their persistence, we were still able to witness the Northern Lights. A special mention to Thomas for his excellent driving. The roads were icy and snowy, but he handled the vehicle with great skill and maintained all safety precautions throughout the journey, making us feel completely safe and comfortable. Also, a special thanks to Matous for capturing such amazing photos — both of the landscapes and of us. We really appreciate the effort and the beautiful memories you helped create. Thank you both, Matous and Thomas, for your incredible dedication and for going the extra mile (literally!) to make this experience truly memorable for us.

Absolutely incredible! Viktor and Francesca (I’m sorry if I’m spelling your name wrong) are extremely knowledgeable and friendly tour guides. Seeing the lights can be a hit or miss, but these two ensured that we had a memorable and comfortable journey nonetheless. Eventually our patience paid off and we ended up driving towards Finland to catch the lights. Viktor’s a fantastic professional photographer too. You’re in for some great memorable pictures with this tour group, 10/10 would recommend!

My wife and I booked a Northern Lights hunt while visiting Tromsø and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Koren was very knowledgeable and constantly monitored weather conditions to take us to areas with the clearest skies. His dedication really showed as he and the driver drove us to multiple locations to maximize our chances of seeing the aurora. We were lucky enough to witness beautiful green aurora curtains and pillars dancing across the sky—an unforgettable experience. Koren also helped with photography tips so we could capture some amazing long-exposure photos. They were also very accommodating to my wife, who is pregnant, making sure she was comfortable throughout the trip and never rushing us while we enjoyed the moment. Highly recommend this experience if you’re visiting Tromsø and hoping to see the Northern Lights!

Jan was incredible and extremely considerate!! We had the best night - we drove an hour out of the city to a spot with clearer skies, beautiful mountains and the intensity, colors, and timing of the lights could not have been better. We got very lucky with such bright lights for over an hour. Jan knew exactly what he was doing and was eager to take our photos, keep the group together, and educate us about the lights. We had a small group which I think is much more efficient and more intimate than the larger group bus. He answered all our questions well - definitely recommend booking a northern lights tour with this company and especially with Jan.

Our experience was nothing short of perfect! We got to see the Northern Lights in all its glory dancing for us, and it was beyond magical! Thanks to our guide, Koren, we had a perfect spot for the evening, despite being a really busy night with many buses leaving the town to chase the lights, he managed to get us to an exquisite spot that wasn’t crowded at all, and our group had the privilege to have it all to ourselves! He was also super knowledgeable about the lights and shared a lot of interesting information with us, and on top of that was also a superb photographer! The drive also went super smooth despite the slippery and often dark roads, thanks to the expertise of our driver for the night, Alex. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, definitely would recommend!
